Getting started
- See everything in use: choose Help › Sample Stories and open one of the examples.
- Start a story: File › New Story… (⇧⌘N) — blank, or from one of eight structures. ⌘N starts a blank story straight away.
- Add a beat: ⌘↩, or right-click a lane on the whiteboard.
- Link a setup to its payoff: hold ⌥ and drag from one beat to the other.
- Switch views: ⌘1 Whiteboard, ⌘2 Timeline, ⌘3 Emotions, ⌘4 Table, ⌘5 Relationships.
For everything else, read the PlotFable Guide: a short tutorial, then each view in turn.
Common questions
Where are my stories? In the .plotfable files you saved, wherever you put them. File › Open Recent and the welcome window list the latest ones.
Can I undo a mistake? Yes — ⌘Z undoes and ⇧⌘Z redoes, as far back as the moment you opened the story.
How do I get my outline into a writing app? File › Export As offers Fountain (for screenwriting apps), Markdown and a PDF outline; the Export button on the toolbar saves the current view as a PDF (and most views as a PNG image).
What's a red or orange mark on a beat? Red means a plot error: a payoff now comes before its setup. Orange means a story device left hanging, such as a Chekhov's gun that is never fired. The inspector explains which.
